Immersing in Progress: A Recap of the Terminal 2 Baggage Programme Immersion Event

On Tuesday 25th June, Heathrow Terminal 2 Baggage Programme held its inaugural Immersion Event of the year. The day focused on showcasing the work progressing within Tranche 5 to design the new baggage system, seeking feedback from attendees to inform the ongoing design work as the project moves towards its next Approval Gateway.

The ‘Immersion’ aspect of the day was created using Virtual Reality, simulations and video loops that were on display for attendees to engage with to visualise the prospective system processes and new baggage environment.

Attendees were split into two distinct audiences: the morning session was made up of Heathrow colleagues and internal stakeholders, while the afternoon assembly consisted of airline and ground handling representatives. The day was well attended by both groups and was a valuable chance for them to engage directly with T2BP colleagues in person.

Key moments included welcome speeches from the T2BP Sponsor, Gavin Payne (Director of Engineering & Baggage), as well as Ali Awcock (Infrastructure Director), who both emphasised the importance of such engagement opportunities with the community to ensure different perspectives are accounted for so that the ultimate solution has been thoroughly considered.

The heart of the Immersion Event lay in the four market stalls set up for attendees to rotate around the room and learn about different elements of the T2BP from the market stall facilitators. The four stalls were:

Virtual Reality (VR) led by Costain

Non-Baggage Flythrough led by Costain & Gebler Tooth

Operational Concept Description / Functional Design / Simulation led by AVIBC & Beumer

High-Level Control Room led by Beumer

Marie Nolan, Tranche 5 Design Lead, shared her thoughts from the day:

“The event showcased all of the hard work being undertaken by the non-baggage design team to support the installation of the new baggage system in Terminal 2. Engagement with the various stakeholders and airline representatives enabled us to collate feedback that may not have made it into the design and was extremely helpful. We enjoyed sharing our solutions and participating in the day. A very worthwhile event. We’re looking forward to the next one”.

The next Immersion Event is intended to be scheduled for Autumn 2024.
