Architecture & Interiors
A new large country house set in 55 acres. Parts of an original house on the site have been incorporated into the final building. The existing layout has been remodelled to include demolition of parts of the main house and two new double-storey extensions.
The architectural strategy was to re-balance the two gabled, two storey volumes of the existing house, with a third, to create symmetry, whilst adding a more reserved two storey extension. Also, taking advantage of the existing site’s levels afforded a secluded basement extension with sunken swimming pools and landscaped terraces. The triple aspect kitchen extension embraces the breath-taking views over the countryside and the restored rose kitchen garden.
In addition to creating the new shell and core, the interiors are all new, including an elegant central limestone stair wrapping around the fireplace and chimney within a new double height entrance hall with new exposed oak trusses over.
Key achievement – gaining a significant uplift in floor area from a very modest original building on the site and creating an elegant and comfortable modern country house without pastiche.
