Astell Street
A new contemporary home in Chelsea built behind the retained 1940’s mock Georgian façade to the street. The scheme involved creating new basement/semi-basement levels and turning the house around so that even though a front door was retained to the street a new principal entrance was created through a courtyard garden from a quiet mews to the rear.
The design was complemented by a central feature stone staircase with a continuous vertical toughened glass balustrade that runs the entire height of the house, and various pieces of specially commissioned furniture or sculpture.
Key Achievement – Transformation of an unimpressive house and outdoor spaces into a spacious and dramatic dwelling with secluded outdoor spaces at Ground and roof terrace levels, and the achievement of Planning Consent for this against initial Local Authority resistance.
