The complete refurbishment of a large country house, set in 55 acres, providing a substantial home. The existing layout has been remodelled to include demolition of parts of the main house and two new double-storey extensions.
The architectural strategy was to re-balance the existing two-gabled, two storey volumes of the existing house, with a third, to create symmetry, whilst adding a more reserved two storey extension. Also, taking advantage of the existing site’s levels afforded a secluded basement extension with sunken swimming pools and landscaped terraces. The triple aspect kitchen extension embraces the breath-taking views over the countryside and the restored rose kitchen garden
In addition to the extending of the house, the interiors were extensively modernised. The newly created entrance doors on the drive’s axis lead on to a grand triple height entrance hall and stone fireplace. This hall houses a cantilevered stone staircase with a recessed stone handrail and a four sided, cantilevered first floor gallery landing with a bespoke, gothic, metal balustrade, echoing the bespoke, external, stone-mullioned, gothic, metal terrace balustrading outside.
The somewhat more traditional interiors of the ground and first floors transform to reveal a contemporary gym and spa basement with full height bespoke Italian doors and illuminated coffered ceilings. Here we were commissioned to design an art installation alongside the interior spa pool. The illuminated installation was developed by re-purposing rainscreen cladding to vary the mood of the space via light and pattern.
